Uses mannose-specific gut adhesion to reduce IBS symptoms and improve iron status in deficient athletes, with RCT support.

Overview
299v (DSM 9843) was isolated from the lining of a healthy human gut \[7]. Probi AB (Lund, Sweden) developed it. It is now part of the DSM-Firmenich portfolio. 299v has been studied mostly for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and for gut effects related to exercise \[1\]\[2].
Mechanism
A systematic scoping review found strain-specific effects of L. plantarum strains, including 299v. These effects are on gut barrier function and on tuning the immune system [1]. 299v sticks to the cells lining the gut using mannose-specific adhesins. It survives stomach acid and bile at levels the body actually produces [7].
Health Benefits
A strain-specific systematic review with meta-analysis (pools results from multiple trials) found 299v helps IBS symptoms (SR/MA) [2]. An RCT found that supplements with 299v changed kidney, muscle, and gut injury biomarkers during running (RCT) [3]. An RCT in female iron-deficient athletes found that 299v improved iron status and physical performance [8] (RCT). Evidence level: RCT for IBS and exercise-related outcomes.
Biology
Originally named Lactobacillus plantarum. It was reclassified as Lactiplantibacillus plantarum in 2020 [4]. It is Gram-positive. It grows with or without oxygen. It does not form spores. It is a rod. It produces lactic acid plus other byproducts. It was isolated from the lining of the human gut.

Available Products
299v is the active ingredient in Probi Digestis (Probi AB) and in GoodBelly (NextFoods). It is also in DSM-Firmenich formulations. These come as capsules, fermented oat drinks, and fruit beverages. Deposited as DSM 9843.
